Building Internal Democracy

How does our organization's internal team structure reflect our values? BCI is a democratic workplace, which means that we as workers collaboratively make decisions about our work and the direction of our organization.

BCI does not have a traditional board or executive director. Instead, we are managed by a Worker Board, which sets our organization’s vision and long-term plans, and provides financial management of our organization. We practice collective management, working together to create and implement organization-wide yearly plans and budgets, and practicing day-to-day management of the organization.

Leadership in BCI is not a ladder. Our structure and practices allow leadership to be shared, flexible, and rooted in staff choice. We practice creating space for staff members to move into and out of different leadership spaces, depending on their interests and skills. And we work to build staff capacity so that more people can grow into leadership roles.

We believe that the ways we practice working together internally make us better partners to the cooperatives and other worker-led projects we support through our external work.
